Complex robotic assembly cell
Compact assembly cell with an ABB robot, welding and orbital riveting. The project aimed at one-person operation of a five-person process, taking on-site transport constraints into account.
Task and implementation
An assembly process run by five operators had to be redesigned for one-person operation, with a payback target of no more than two years. On-site installation was also constrained by the size of the available lift.
We integrated an ABB robot, five Festo servos, two manipulators, resistance welding, a rotary table, orbital riveting, quality inspection and four vibratory bowl feeders into the cell. The operator's task was designed around raw material preparation. The modular machine structure was matched to the lift dimensions at the design stage, so that the equipment could be brought in under the given site conditions.
The operator handles material supply
The welding, riveting, feeding and inspection required for the assembly were combined in one cell. Raw material preparation is part of the operator's task; the remaining operations are performed by the integrated equipment. One-person operation instead of five and a payback of no more than two years were design targets. The modular structure was also adapted to the size limit of the on-site lift.
