Metal parts manufacturing
Adaptive robotic grinding cell
Grinding of multiple product types to size with a KUKA robot, automatic tool change and force compensation. The design also allows measurement before and after machining. The robot can be programmed via offline CAM software.

Task and implementation
Metal parts of different geometries had to be ground uniformly to size. Besides handling the product variants, contact during machining and the verifiability of the final result were also important.
The products arrive on a two-position rotary table and are handled by a KUKA robot capable of automatic head change. Force compensation of the grinding surface supports contact during machining. The cell is also suitable for measuring parts before and after grinding, so machining and inspection can be handled in one system. The equipment is controlled by a Siemens PLC.
Beyond the robot's motion, tool contact matters too
The grinding result is influenced by both the part geometry and the tool contact. Force compensation supports the contact, and the automatic head change makes it possible to machine multiple product types. The option of measuring before and after grinding links machining with inspection.
